A History of Coffee Mugs - When Did They Originate?  Interesting timeline of how mugs developed and changed over the centuries.

What Is Earthenware?  Read all about it on Emerson Creek Pottery's website.  They make great looking kitchenware, and their glazes are all chemical free, lead and cadmium safe.

On the go

Yeti mugs are one of the most well known brands of travel mugs on the market, and with good reason.  It will keep your drinks hot or cold for hours!

Tervis double-walled tumblers and water bottles keeps drinks hot or cold for hours.  They come in many different designs and sizes, and feature your favorite sports teams, characters, or other organizations. (And yes, there are several featuring Baby Yoda.)

I'm seeing more and more people bring their Keep Cups in to coffee shops to fill up, and several cafes are selling them as well.  The glass body and cork grip look great, and the BPA free sip lid works great as well.  Glass does not impart any flavor to your drink.  If you truly want to be plastic free, there is no reason you can't take the lid off and sip that way.  (As long as you aren't in a moving vehicle or running you should be fine.) They come in 8, 12, and 16 oz sizes.

Klean Kanteen are one of the best options you'll find for a stainless steel travel mug.  They are double-wall vacuum insulated to keep your drinks hot or cold for hours.  The brushed stainless steel models have no coatings inside or out, so they won't leach flavors or smells.  The colored models do have what they call a chip-resistant Klean Coat finish.  This is a powder coating formulated specifically to be safe for humans and the environment. Klean Kanteen is a B-Corp, family owned company.

These stainless steel travel mugs from Zojirushi are another excellent choice.  These are spill proof and will keep your drink hot for hours.  The company even offers a 5 year warranty on heat retention for the product!

Bodum makes some of the best french press brewers around.  This one lets you conveniently brew, press, and go all in the same container.  The double wall construction keeps your drink warm for hours.  The lid is spill resistant but not spill proof, so keep your drink upright.  A great option for those who love french press coffee!  (Note: The highly rated JavaPresse Manual Burr Grinder is perfect for grinding coffee for a french press on the go.)

cozy at home

East Fork Pottery in Asheville, NC have been making great pottery for many years.  This mug is their most popular product, selling out within minutes of a new batch going on sale. (See article to the right or below)  Superb craftsmanship, great designs, and all of their glazes are lead and cadmium free.  They also are in compliance with California's Prop 65, which is the most stringent standard for safety in the U.S.

Interesting note: One of the owners of the company is the great-grandson of French painter Henri Matisse.

These high quality mugs from Le Creuset can withstand very high temperatures, and are easy to clean.  Very dense clay mixture that when fired, maintains even temperatures.

Ever since I discovered that ceramic mugs can contain lead and cadmium, I've been wary of what mugs I use for hot beverages.  Especially acidic ones like coffee, which can cause these and other chemicals to leach into your drink even faster.

I am considering switching to mostly glass and stainless steel mugs.  The glass mugs from Epare are among the best I've found.  They are sturdy, made of borosilicate glass, which is stronger and less prone to defects.  They are also double-walled to maintain the temperature of your drink for longer, and are condensation resistant.

Bodum also makes a line of excellent quality borosilicate glassware for coffee or tea.

Many times when I drink coffee at home (or at a cafe) I prefer to only fill my cup half full.  This way I can drink it all before it gets cold and simply refill it as I need to.  These mugs add a whole new dimension to the idea of a half cup!  With these I can firmly say, "Fill 'er up to give me half a cup!"  These half cup mugs will be the talk of all your guests.

This is another route to go, the stainless steel mug.  Tru Blu makes excellent ones for home use.  Made with premium food grade 18/8 stainless steel, they won't rust, tarnish, or impart any unwanted flavors to your drink.  And since there is no plastic you don't have to worry about BPA or other chemicals leaching out. Double wall, insulated stainless steel.

Now this is a unique product, and possibly the ultimate in reusable, sustainable coffee cups.  The Huskee Cup is actually made from coffee husks.  I have not used one yet, so I can only say that it is a creative idea.  The reviews are mixed, with some people saying that don't keep your coffee hot for long, or that they retain smells due to being porous.  Others say they love them, as long as you use them for coffee and not a more delicate drink like white or green tea.  Huskee gets points for ingenuity either way.

Ember coffee cup is a "smart" coffee mug that will keep your coffee at the same temperature for hours.  A companion app allows you to adjust the temperature setting from your phone.  If Apple made something like an iMug, it would probably look something like this.

I have one and like it a lot.  I don't use it every day, but it works really well when I do.  Keeping coffee hot for as long as possible in a mug is always a challenge.  This is a great solution.

One of my favorite mug styles will always be the classic diner mug.  The simplicity of the design, the thick build, and the retro make for a nearly perfect mug.  No wonder it has endured for decades.
